Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee and three-time Olympic canoeing gold medalist, has expressed strong disapproval of comments made by Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who won gold in the women’s welterweight category at the Paris Olympics.
Khelif recently voiced her dissatisfaction with certain officials’ decisions during the Games, particularly regarding the handling of gender eligibility tests. She claimed that some officials exhibited “disdain” towards athletes, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds.
In response, Estanguet stated, “The Olympic Games are a celebration of unity and respect. Criticizing the very officials who uphold these values undermines the spirit of the Games.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and honor of the Olympic movement.
Khelif’s remarks have sparked a broader discussion about the treatment of athletes and the transparency of decision-making processes within the Olympic framework. While some support her stance, others, including Estanguet, believe that such criticisms can damage the reputation of the Games.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has yet to issue an official statement regarding the controversy. However, President Thomas Bach has previously emphasized the need for clear policies to protect women’s sports and ensure fair competition.
As the debate continues, stakeholders within the Olympic community are calling for open dialogue to address concerns and uphold the values that define the Olympic spirit.
