Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson on November 15 by unanimous decision in a fight watched by more than 60 million people worldwide, and now the YouTuber-turned-boxer may have a new opponent.
Paul’s win over Tyson has been met with a lot of criticism, with the 27-year-old’s team having to issue a statement insisting the fight was not fixed, saying: “Fixing a professional boxing match is a federal crime in the United States. Paul vs. Tyson was a professional match sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Both fighters, in good faith, performed to the best of their abilities with the goal of winning the fight. There were absolutely no restrictions – contractual or otherwise – on either fighter.”
After facing this criticism, perhaps Paul needs to fight an opponent closer to his age to regain some legitimacy, and it seems like he’s moving towards that, a little bit.
On Tuesday, November 26, 38-year-old former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. announced that he’s been contacted by Paul’s team about a potential fight between the two. Chavez Jr. may still be more than a decade older than his potential opponent, but at least there won’t be a 30-year age gap like there was in Paul’s latest fight with the great Mike Tyson.
Speaking about the potential fight, Chavez Jr said: “It’s an option, we’re looking at it, let’s see, I have a meeting this week… I want to fight a champion, but fighting Jake Paul, for the fame and the media, would put me in a position to fight other people. I’m not looking for that, it’s been presented. It’s not specific, but let’s see what happens.”
The Mexican is certainly right about the fame and media exposure a fight with Paul would bring. Whatever you think of the social media star’s fights, you can’t deny the numbers he brings, as shown by the fact that over 60 million people watched his most recent fight. In fact, the last time Chavez Jr fought was on the co-main event of Jake Paul’s fight against Mike Perry, which took place in July of this year. That night, the former middleweight champion won by unanimous decision over former UFC fighter Uriah Hall.
Looking at this potential matchup, Jake Paul is currently 11-1, with seven of those wins coming by way of knockout. Chavez Jr., on the other hand, is 54-6, with 34 of those wins coming by way of knockout. Granted, the Mexican is a former middleweight champion, but he won the title in June 2011 with a win over Sebastian Zbik. He successfully defended his title three times before losing to Sergio Martinez in September 2012.
